She has three years writing stored procedures and another five doing SQL queries.<\/p>\n<p>You can write a job description from that, right?<\/p>\n<p>Of course you can, and the resulting candidate set will be a disparate smattering of far-flung folks, all of whom fulfill the criteria of the rudimentary job description\u2026 and only 10% of whom can actually do the job.<\/p>\n<p>Why this dissonance? Why all this wasted time (for you and for the candidates), when \u201cwhat skills\u201d and \u201chow much experience\u201d is clearly outlined?<\/p>\n<p>The problem isn\u2019t knowing what you need \u2013 and how much of it you need \u2013 the problem lies in failing to ask: \u201cwhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Question: \u201cWhy do we need someone with PHP experience?\u201d<\/em><br \/>\nAnswer: \u201cWe need someone who can connect our PHP application to existing APIs quickly.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>Question: \u201cWhy quickly?\u201d<\/em><br \/>\nAnswer: \u201cWe have 30 days to get this project off the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is part of the consultative approach Link takes to account management. By asking \u201cwhy\u201d \u2013 and by taking an active interest in our clients\u2019 operations \u2013 we can get granular. We can identify candidates who have actually <em>done this kind of work before<\/em> \u2013 and under similar restrictions \u2013 so we\u2019ll reduce the number of people needed to interview before finding the right match.<\/p>\n<p>Without the \u201cwhy,\u201d asking for someone \u201cwith PHP experience\u201d is apt to yield a lot of web and WordPress developers \u2013 front end folks who can handle a little business logic, but have never done the kind of API integration you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<p>Would you rather have 30 candidates with PHP, or three candidates who\u2019ve actually done API integration with PHP on a tight deadline?<\/p>\n<p>Go that extra mile. Ask the right questions. Ask \u201cwhy?\u201d (and \u201cunder what constraints?\u201d and \u201cwith what expected outcome?\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll save yourself a lot of headache later on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hiring managers already know the kind of candidate they need.
