Late last year, we started hosting the \u201cNorthwest Tech Meetup<\/a>\u201d near our office in Summerlin. This was an informal gathering of IT folks \u2013 directors, developers, engineers and entrepreneurs \u2013 getting together to talk tech.<\/p>\n

We noticed something at those meetings: many of our first-time visitors were also new to tech groups in general. They appreciated what the Northwest Tech Meetup was doing, and \u201cwished there were more things like this in Las Vegas.\u201d<\/p>\n

But there are<\/em> great tech groups in Las Vegas, if you know where to look. They exist for almost every niche and every industry.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, we\u2019ve outlined four of our favorites (in no particular order) below:<\/p>\n

1:\u00a0Las Vegas Developers<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n

A self-described \u201ctechnology-agnostic\u00ad group for software developers, sysadmins and devops,\u201d Las Vegas Developers is run by Warner Onstine<\/a> (MaxCDN<\/a>) and Adam Englander <\/a>(LaunchKey<\/a>).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s one of many tech meetups that adopts the classroom-style format, with presentations by meetup members, followed by Q&A. Content focuses on developer topics ranging from beginner-advanced. Bring a laptop to follow along. Meets once per month.<\/p>\n

2:\u00a0SIM Las Vegas<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n

SIM Las Vegas is an established Las Vegas institution with regular meetings, major events (SIM Golf Tournament and the Nevada IT Symposium), and community outreach in legislation, education, and workforce development. This is the elite \u201cwho\u2019s who\u201d of Vegas IT, with membership open to senior-level IT corporate\/divisional heads, key managers, full-time college\/university faculty, and partner\/principal level consultants.<\/p>\n

\u00a03:\u00a0VegasJS<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n

One of the more active tech meetups, VegasJS has been meeting twice monthly (once for more traditional JS, once for NodeBots \u2013 which focuses on \u201cthe intersection of hardware and software\u201d). Considering the massive popularity of JS frameworks, this is a meeting local devs won\u2019t want to miss. Run by Jimmy Jacobson<\/a>\u00a0(Wedgies<\/a>), et. al., they meet at Work in Progress<\/a>. Bring a laptop \u2013 and your other hardware, Raspberry Pi, drone, etc. for the NodeBots portion.<\/p>\n

4:\u00a0Northwest Tech Meetup<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Maybe we\u2019re biased, but we really like this Summerlin-based tech meetup, which meets the second Wednesday of every month at the Summerlin Sambalatte. It\u2019s an informal \u201ccoffee and conversation\u201d meeting where IT pros come to discuss projects. As far as we know, this is the only tech meetup in the Northwest (most are located Downtown at Work in Progress<\/a> or further south at the Innevation Center<\/a>).
